Why PEI is one of Canada's golfing hot spots

Over the past few years, PEI has become one of Canada's premiere golf destinations. So how did a place best known for its beaches become a haven for golfers? By focusing on quality, variety, access and value.

Score Magazine didn't rate PEI as Canada's No. 1 Golf Destination two years running without good cause. Courses are well designed, superbly maintained and offer a full range of amenities. And while facilities may be upscale, Maritimers will appreciate the traditional PEI hospitality that makes people feel like they're part of the family.

As for variety, there's lots of it. Twenty-five courses, each with its own unique character, and none more than a short drive from the Confederation Bridge. Everything from true championship courses that have tested the skills of pros like Mike Weir, Fred Couples and John Daly to the more forgiving kind designed for the family golf experience. Links style, traditional country club, and contemporary design that fits well into PEI's rolling hills. Eighteen holes or nine holes, you'll find a variety of courses to suit your game and your liking.

No matter where you're staying, there are always some of those courses close by.

Cavendish has a number of great additions and now boasts six courses within a 15 minute drive. In the east, nine golf layouts are within 30 minutes of Brudenell Resort. Centrally, Charlottetown has five courses within 20 minutes. Four more courses are located only a short drive away in the western part of the province.

The cost of golfing on PEI varies from course to course, but prices compare well with other golf venues in the Atlantic region. Golf vacation package options can help make the golfing experience even greater value, and many of the province's accommodation facilities offer complete golf holiday packages that make vacation planning a breeze.

New for this year is the Golf PEI Reservation Centre. One call and you can get help with everything from singe person tee time bookings at one golf course to group bookings at courses all across the province. The Reservation center also offers a range of Golf Packages from which customers can choose or customized packages for groups or individuals who have specific needs. Bookings can be made for everything from airline travel, car rental and accommodations to lobster dinners after the game. Golf PEI's Reservation Centre can be reached toll-free at (866) GOLF-PEI or online at golfpei.ca.

For many golfing fans, what makes PEI even more distinct is what you can do when you aren't golfing.

PEI's renowned beaches are still the centre of many family vacations. Theatre is everywhere in summer, from community productions to the Confederation Centre Mainstage. Cyclists consider PEI an untapped treasure, with the Confederation Trail, the former railway line, offering almost 300 groomed kilometres. There are also scenic tours, festivals, horse racing, windsurfing, kayaking, deep sea fishing, camping … the list goes on and on.

There's lots of golf options and lots of options in addition to golf. Perhaps that's the secret to PEI's success in the golf vacation stakes.
