THINGS TO DO

PEI: Things to Do

Outdoor Adventure

Tip-to-tip Touring

The Prince Edward Island landscape resembles one large playground, with sandboxes, water games and pedal paths. For active visitors, the lay of the land (and sea) is just too convenient, with the bike trail leading down to the kayak launch, or the beach fronting on prime windsurfing territory.

Filling your days with outdoor adventure is not a problem: sea kayaks, river kayaks and canoes are the perfect means of transport to get a look at the province from the oceanside; cyclists will appreciate not only the tip-to-tip Confederation Trail, but the quiet country roadways and the quieter clay back roads. The Island is known as a first-rate windsurfing location with its steady breezes and warm ocean waters. How about diving, snorkeling, parasailing or jet boating? And for the nature lover we have bird watching and sport fishing. No matter your style of adventure, the Island's fresh air will lure you out of doors and promise an invigorating and stimulating experience.

Tip-to-tip Trail Racing

A brand-new event will be launched on Prince Edward Island's Confederation Trail in late September 2004. The Confederation Trail Open is designed for both elite and recreational cyclists and will cover the Island from one tip to the other – a total of more than 300 kilometres. The three-day race will also prove to be a social event, with nightly meals and music. Elite cyclists and recreational relay teams will be racing the course, which includes side trips through woods and along back roads.

Golf the Island

A World-Class Golf Destination

PEI's golf community has a proud history dating back to 1893, when the Charlottetown Golf Club opened its doors. Since then, both the quality and the quantity of golf courses has continued to grow and PEI has recently been rated by the readers of Score Magazine as "Canada's Best Golf Destination."

In addition to offering a premier golf experience featuring a variety of nationally ranked courses, can't- beat-prices and breathtaking scenery (spring, summer and fall), PEI also offers all the ingredients for a memorable vacation for the whole family.

Shopping

Shopping the Island

Inspired by the images of our, landscape, Island artists and craftspeople create hand-stitched quilts, pottery bowls, intricate woodworking and woven tapestries. Dozens of shops, from quaint to sophisticated, are dotted across the Island. If you are visiting in late September, you will certainly want to take part in the annual Studio Tour, but you may wish to use the Studio Tour Guide to help you plot shopping excursions any time of year. Look for copies at any Visitor Information Centre, or visit our crafts section.

In addition to the wide range of traditional craft products such as pottery, weaving or knitting you may find some unusual products in the many shops scattered across the province. Look for handmade soaps, sandcrafts, folk furniture, hammocks, Mi'kmaq figurines or puppets.

While visiting the Confederation Centre of the Arts, which houses eastern Canada's largest gallery, don't forget to drop in to the first-rate gift shop, as well as the Art Sales and Rental office which carries a large selection of works by local artists.

We also have great down-town areas and malls in major communities as well as the fun atmosphere of boardwalk boutiques and summer shopping outlets in places like Cavendish.

You can also drop by one of our Farmers' Markets located in Charlottetown, Kensington, Wood Islands and Summerside and enjoy the wonderful selection of local and organic fresh produce, flowers, arts and crafts as well as freshly made coffee and baked goods.

If you're in the market for lots of fun and you enjoy hunting for hidden treasures, you've come to the right place. Take a moment to browse through these links to plan your shopping trip.

Dining on PEI

PEI offers a wide range of restaurants featuring an array of Island delicacies. Renowned for our fresh seafood, which is available across the Island, no visit to PEI is complete without enjoying at least one lobster supper. And remember, PEI is also home to Malpeque Oysters, Cultured Blue Mussels and our world-famous PEI potatoes.

World Famous Food

When touring Prince Edward Island, you'll see miles of lush rolling farmlands and coastlines dotted with fishing harbours, so it may not come as a surprise to discover that the food industry is the single most important contributor to our provincial economy. PEI is proud of its "clean and green" reputation world-wide and offers tourists a wonderful opportunity to "tour and taste" some of the best we have to offer.

From lobsters to chocolates, from jams and jellies to wines, and of course our famous PEI potatoes, there's so much to choose from. So don't forget to include our Island food product tours when planning your vacation. Your tastebuds will thank you for it.

A Beach for Everyone

Surrounded by sand, of course Prince Edward Island claims miles of beautiful beaches. And each one has its own distinct character. Looking for sand that sings? Try scuffing your toes at Basin Head. How about clam digging? Check out one of the south shore beaches like Pinette or Tea Hill. Prefer lots of company? Then stop by Cavendish or Brackley Beach in Prince Edward Island National Park. Need a campsite at the beach? Choose one of seven of our Provincial Parks – Cabot, Panmure or Red Point are some favourites.

Life at the Beach

On the face of it, a few million grains of sand and a constantly shifting ocean might not offer a whole lot of entertainment potential. But look again. Prince Edward Island beaches quite possibly provide the best vacation value in multiple categories.

Amusement quotient: Sand castles (unlimited shapes and sizes minimal tools required). Digging a hole to China (unlimited also clam shell will do the trick). Jumping waves (also a game without end). As a base for volleyball court (softer than the gym floor).

Relaxation value: Just close your eyes and listen (way cheaper than white noise machine). Open your eyes and watch (costs less than a movie). Read a book and let the seagulls punctuate the page turning (be sure to choose a beach book).

Romance factor: Sunset on the beach (nothing better to create a romantic mood). Picnics on the beach (just watch out for sand in the sandwiches). Long walks hand in hand (enjoy it and never mind if it sounds a bit cliché). We can promise there will be nothing commonplace about your romantic walk on an Island beach.
