Located in Drumheller, Dinosaur Trail Golf & Country Club is situated in the heart of the Badlands. The course's wooded terrain provides a striking contrast to the surrounding desert-like landscape. Jagged hills sprinkled with ancient boulders and cacti provide a setting that is truly unique. The site is home to dinosaur bone beds that date back 75 million years, which is where the club gets its name. The golf course was carefully constructed around these beds and the 11th hole was even reconfigured so as not to disturb the possible dinosaur skeletons embedded in the hillside. The layout has a player-friendly front nine, which you'll want to take advantage of because the back nine is much more challenging. Dinosaur Trail's final nine holes are even known for being one of the area's toughest closing nines.

Very unique back 9 holes.

We love to come back playing again! You could not find such unique golf course in western Canada. Thanks you and appreciate all course staff's efforts maintaining your course in great condition?

Worth playing

Front nine nicely laid out and in great shape. Back nine narrow fairways plays at a higher elevation to front 9 and wind the day we played a real factor. Some of the holes difficult to pick the line on the drive until you have played a few times. A couple holes maybe a little tricked up vs great layout. Could use some better mapping on scorecard or on tees to help. All in all good course need to come back and try again.

Potential

The course has potential to be excellent but some improvement is needed. As a 1st time player you would need a booklet that would tell you where to lay up to on at least 3 holes. Also no concession open on course and no beverage cart on course. Challenging course but back 9 isn’t playable for high handicappers.

Unique, but gimmicky

First off, let's give credit where credit is due: you will be hard pressed to find another course quite like this in Canada. I've played other courses in Southern Alberta and the Okanagan that have a similar aesthetic, but nothing quite like the experience you get on the back 9 at Dinosaur Trail. It truly feels like you are playing down in St. George or Mesquite. But, that doesn't necessarily make it a great golf course. It's not. The front 9 is actually decent. That's the "traditional nine". It's reminiscent of a good-quality community course that you would find in many small towns. There's a good mix of holes, and a really pretty short par 3 over water. That side gets the thumbs up from me. But really, the back nine is why many people travel to play this course, and it's where the problems lie. It's gimmicky. It's "target golf" with lots of blind shots and quirks, and it made for a frustrating experience. I was never quite sure where I was supposed to hit it off the tee, and the layout calls for less than driver on many holes. The last par 3 is neat, but apart from that I didn't care for it. Yeah, it's cool that you are playing out in the hoodoos, and you get some great views. But, for someone like me who appreciates a course when it's laid out in front of you, it proved uninviting. I would imagine most higher handicaps would go through a bag of balls on the back nine. Clearly, that doesn't bother some - after reading other reviews, it's evident that you either love it or hate it. Some golfers seem to enjoy the "challenges" of a quirky course, but I'm not one of them. Lots of potential for a cool experience, but the architect missed the mark in my eyes. Aside from that, the driving range is good and the staff are really nice.

Hidden gem

Great course to play. If you’re looking for a round that feels like your in another country then this is the place you have to go. It’s a great track. Front nine is a typical tree lined course and a good warm up for the picturesque adventure of the back nine. Put the driver away and work on hitting the fairways.

Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club

I last played golf here about four years ago and it was disappointing to see a course that has one of the most unique settings for nine holes of golf has seemingly allowed the course to slide into a state of disrepair.

Pulling into the parking lot was an adventure dodging deep pot holes and areas of broken pavement. The driving range appeared to have more dirt than grass. Cart paths were in varying states of decay, most notably on Hole 12 where someone is definitely going to get hurt attempting to navigate down this white knuckle incline.

The fairways were scruffy. I was happy that at least the greens were in playable condition. Staff were friendly and it was interesting to learn that the course is currently for sale. No further explanation needed.

Dinosaur Trail Golf & Country Club

South central Alberta is home to one of the most unique golfing experiences you may come across, that being Dinosaur Trail G&CC. Two distinctly different courses in one, the front 9 is your conventional parkland style course with lush green fairways framed by mature trees, a few water hazards & well placed bunkers. It provides you a relatively safe place to shake out any rust in your game as the fun is about to begin.

Pick up your cart as you make the turn & take the cart path up to the 10th tee box. Take a minute to look around & let your imagination transport you into the pages of Edgar Rice Burroughs "The Land That Time Forgot." Spectacularly rugged & panoramic views of an ancient landscape where dinosaurs once held dominion.

Interspersed throughout the innumerable ravines, canyons & steep drop-offs there really are fairways & greens out there, you just need to come up with the shots to find them. No matter how often you've played here, every hole on the back 9 will give one pause as this is target golf...but on steroids. You will either love it or loath it but one things is for certain, you will remember it.

Nice Course

If you want to play 2 different styles of course in one 18 hole round this the the place to play. Front nine was fun, well treed with sand traps around the greens and some holes with water. The back nine is my fav as it is laid-out atop the badlands. Need to play smart as there is lots of trouble left and right on most of the holes. Love it....

Bring Your A Game to the Back 9

The front nine along the Red Deer River was reasonably easy, beautiful and fun. The back nine in the badlands was extremely challenging. The views were great, the course conditions were great but an A Game was needed to card a good score. Tough describes the back nine in a complimentary way. You should seriously consider a cart if you are going to do the badlands nine - lots of elevation changes. I'd come back in a heart beat and I will return. Pace of play depends on how good a golfer you are! The world class Tyrrell Dinosaur Museum is a must and is within a mile of the course - don't miss it!

The Food Will Bring Me Back

Goolash or Beef: Goolash is the front nine and Beef is the back nine. A brand new Restaurant and both meals were incredible. But the back nine holes are not for the proud and proper. These holes will beat up the best and crush them. Bring your best golfer friend that beats you and they will be feeling like you when you were beat by them. Quiet serene and beautiful.

Want a challange?

Course is in great shape. Front 9 is like other courses around Alberta but you better have a straight shot or lots of balls when you go through the tunnel to the back 9. Lots of narrow approaches and if you miss your shot to the side it will likely be long gone. Great course overall, I would love to do 18 on just the back nine.

great scenery

Course was in good shape despite being next to where the dinosaurs roamed. Back nine was beautiful going through the hoodoos. Some target golf which is appreciated. Front nine has trees but fairly standard, some nice holes with water. Good challenge.
